Two cultures, one Europe (PBU2/0912/18)
The cross-border area of Poland and Ukraine has enormous cultural diversity and traditions. Lublin as the historic capital of the Polish-Lithuanian Union is the heritage of five nations (Poland, Lithuania, Belarus, Latvia and Ukraine). Through the promotion of the Lublin castle, Unia Square and the historical museum, the project will show that the Union’s heritage does not apply only to two, but to five nations. Undeniably, Lublin is the place where the most important act of sixteenth-century Europe was signed. The act, which for the next 200 years defined the existence of several European nations and marked their development. The Polish-Lithuanian Union is inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List as a heritage of 5 nations (Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Belarus and Ukraine). We want young people to examine how this act affected the relations of Poles and Ukrianians, and above all whether it also affected Uzhhorodians who were outside the borders of the then Polish- Lithuanian Commonwealth, how do they today look at the inhabitants of the former Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, how their traditions differed, understanding problems of Ukraine at the time, and what significance do they give to Polish- Ukrainian relations. The special multimedia exhibition will be exhibited in the Lublin and Uzhhorod centers. Additionally, young people will prepare a special multimedia comics about the history of castles - Lublin and Uzhhorod, finding common points.
Unfortunately, at present there is no sufficient institutions cultivating a multi-ethnic, multi-religious and multicultural structure of this area. At the same time, interest of young generations in cultivating local traditions with a strong influence of Western culture is becoming increasingly low. Other problem is that despite the fact that the Polish-Ukrainian cross-border area has huge potential for development and creation of tourism, it suffers from very low promotion and awareness. Many visitors and tourists often only accidentally find out interesting tourist locations and locations that have a tremendous significance for both our past and the future. All these aspects significantly impede the proper development of the region. The project overall objective being set by project partners themselves is to enhance knowledge of population, especially youth, about cultural heritage of Lubelskie voivodeship and Zakarpatska oblast. For this purpose, 2 centres for development of common PL-UA culture in Lublin and Uzhhorod with a comprehensive cultural offer including folklore, art, literature, painting, theatre, crafts, etc. will be developed. The developed cultural centers are embassies of Uzhhorod in Lublin and Lublin in Uzhhorod. They will be open 5 days a week. There will be an information points where guidebooks and exhibitions dedicated to both cities will be available. Here once a month meetings with people associated with cities (historians, chefs, students, academic lecturers) will be conducted. They will talk about interesting issues related to cities. The centers will be all year round and promote the historical and cultural achievements of both cities. A multimedia presentation on interesting things will be available. In addition, an online platform will be built at the center to provide current information about city life, along with tourist and cultural offers. The centers will be promoted as places promoting cultural and historical heritage of the Lublin region and Transcarpathia region: each center will preserve and promote local, regional and national cultural heritage of both, Ukraine and Poland, namely crafts, folklore, art, literature, painting, theatre, paying special attention at joint Ukrainian-Polish objects of heritage located in the Lublin region and Transcarpathia region.
Beneficiaries of these centers will be mainly creative young people interested in cultural heritage of Poland and Ukraine. Additionally, thanks to the rich cultural heritage and the link to local traditions, we would like to draw attention to the cultural legacy of the society through the project and transfer and promote it to the present generations. Thus, other goal is to develop the territory as a common tourist destination based on cultural and historical heritage. Joint work of all partners of the project will lead to creation of Strategy of joint promotion and preservation of cultural and historical heritage and will contribute to increasing the attractiveness of the region.
